âCourt, this has gone far enough,â Leya declared forcefully, calling on her total reserve of willpower. âYouâve done nothing but manhandle me this evening and Iâve had it!â
âYouâre telling me!â he agreed with heavy mockery, ignoring her attempt to free her wrists. âYouâre determined to run me to a frazzle, arenât you?â he went on accusingly, his face very close to hers, his eyes sweeping over her parted lips. âIâve told you time and again Iâm not a terribly energetic man. Why do you do this to me?â
âYouâre the one who started it!â she gasped, infuriated and desperately trying to retain some semblance of self-control. âYou insist on playing the heavy-handed male and then wonder why I object!â
âYou force me into that role because you keep playing the part of the recalcitrant, willful female.â
âYou forget,â she charged defiantly, âthatâs my main attraction for you! If I turned meek and willing, youâd probably lose interest immediately!â
âIs that why you behave this way?â he asked, as if understanding had just dawned.
âYouâre trying to hold my attention?â He looked very pleased.
âNo!â she stormed, incensed that he had deliberately misunderstood her.
âThen why donât you try being meek and willing and see if that succeeds in getting rid of me?â he suggested helpfully.
âBecause by the time I found out whether or not that would work it would be a trifle too late!â
âIâve got news for you, honey,â he retorted, stooping to swing her high into his arms. âItâs already too late. Much too late.â
âCourt!â Leya was clamped tightly to his broad chest, and the heat of him threatened to burn her fingertips through the material of his shirt. âPut me down this instant! I will not be ⦠be carried off for your amusement!â
âWhen you discover something amusing in all this,â he told her encouragingly, striding toward the hall, âlet me know. Personally, Iâm not laughing.â
âIâll never forgive you!â she tried valiantly as he rounded the corner with due caution for her head.
But already she could feel the excitement churning in her veins, almost swamping her with its intensity. She didnât want it to be like this, not with so much unresolved between them. But she couldnât deny to herself that she wanted him. She had wanted him since their meeting in Oregon. And she was very much afraid it was amounting to something much deeper and more dangerous. With feelings this chaotic, was love very far away?
âYou already forgave me earlier this evening out on that terrace,â he pointed out, kicking open the bedroom door with a careless foot. âYou said we could take up where we left off in Oregon. This, in case youâve forgotten, is where we left off!â
âNot quite!â she hissed as he tossed her down lightly onto a wide, low bed and flipped on the small lamp standing on the bedstand. âWe were still getting to know each other. We werenât sleeping together!â
The room was as sleek and modem and neutrally colored as the rest of the condominium. Low-profile teak
